New Kent Rotary Recognizes Paul Harris Fellow Wakie Howard
At its meeting on September 21, the New Kent Rotary Club recognized Wakie Howard for significant contributions to the Paul Harris Fellowship. The Fellowship is named for Rotary’s founder, Paul Harris, a Chicago lawyer who started the service club with three business associates in 1905. That is an ideal held high by Rotarians the world over.”

For several decades, the New Kent Club has been putting the Rotary International motto of “Service Above Self” into practice, most recently by contributing funds raised at its annual Christmas tree sale to New Kent Sheriff’s Auxiliary and to the New Kent High School Interact Club. The mission of Rotary International is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through its fellowship of business, professional and community leaders.

Rotary International Polio Project

After 25 years of hard work, Rotary and its partners are on the brink of eradicating this tenacious disease, but a strong push is needed now to root it out once and for all. It is a window of opportunity of historic proportions.
Reaching the ultimate goal of a polio-free world presents ongoing challenges, not the least of which is a hundreds of million dollar funding gap. Of course, Rotary alone can't fill this gap, but continued Rotarian advocacy for government support can help enormously.
As long as polio threatens even one child anywhere in the world, children everywhere remain at risk. The stakes are that high

Christmas Mother Bike Project

Purchasing bicycles to support the work of Charles City and New Kent Christmas mothers was an idea that occurred to the Richmond Area Bicycling Association (RABA) over 10 years ago. Dr. Randy Rosemond is responsible for the collection for our area. Volunteers store, build, and distribute
the bikes. “RABA members show up at the storage area with trucks, vans and many times trailers and transport the
bikes to the City of Richmond and surrounding counties (Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, Chesterfield, New Kent and Charles City, and so
forth).”
The New Kent Rotary Club was thrilled to be asked to participate this year and, through its Christmas tree sales, raised enough money to double the RABA donations, which doubled the number of bikes purchased for New Kent County. Rotary tree sale income will also be used to support the Band Boosters at New Kent High School. “We were really pleased with the community’s support of our tree sales in this first year of this project,” said Claude Carmack, Club Chairman. “We are hoping it becomes an annual event to benefit the community. You’ll be hearing from us soon as we gear up for Rotary Day at the Races!”
